Some people say the best password is one you don't have to remember. The auth? Socket plug-in and MariaDB's UNIX? Socket make this idea possible on MySQL.

Although these two plug-ins are not newly released, UNIX? Socket has been installed by default on MariaDB 10.4 and is one of the authentication methods.

Plug in installation and use

As mentioned above, this is not a new function. Even if MySQL is installed using the. deb installation package maintained by Debian team, root user will be created to use socket authentication. This is true for both MySQL and MariaDB:

For Percona Server, the. deb package from the official Percona Repo also sets root user authentication to auth? Socket. This is an example of Percona Server for MySQL 8.0.16-7 and Ubuntu 16.04:

So why is it so amazing? The plug-in uses the so? Peercred socket option to check whether the Linux user matches the MySQL user to get information about the user running the client program. Therefore, the plug-in can only be used on systems that support the so? Peercred option, such as Linux The so? Peercred socket option allows you to retrieve the process uid that is connected to the socket. He can then get the user name associated with the uid.

Access denied because MySQL does not have a 'vagrant' user. Let's create a user and try again:

Now, let's try again on the Percona Server version MySQL 8 installed on CentOS 7:

Failed because the plug-in is not loaded:

Let's add plug-ins at run time:

Now we can log in as the operating system user "percona".

No, you can't!

conclusion

MySQL is flexible enough in many aspects, one of which is the authentication method. As we saw in this article, relying on system users can access without a password. This is useful in several cases, but only one: migrating from RDS / Aurora to regular MySQL and using IAM database authentication to maintain access without using a password.
