Url format of data type -- URL (data: image / gif; base64, AAAAAA): Embedding small data directly into Url

The so-called Url format of "data" type was proposed in RFC2397 for the purpose that some "small" data can be embedded directly in the Web page, rather than loaded from external files. For example, for the img Tag, even if the image is very, very small to only one point, it is to be read from another external image file, such as gif file. If the browser implements the Url format of data type, the file can be read directly from the inside of the page file.

The Url format of data type was proposed as early as 1998. Up to now, browsers such as Firfox, Opera, Safari and Konqueror have been supported, but IE has not been supported until version 7.0. There are too many things that IE does not support. :

The gradient blue background is actually formed by repeat-x with a small picture of 1x28. This image is very small, but 104 bytes, embedded directly into html or css files is still very suitable.

The most direct advantage of Url s in data format is that they would have caused a new network access, because there is a web page address, there will be no new network access now, because here is the content of the web page. Doing so will reduce the load on the server, but also increase the size of the current page. So it's especially good for "small" data.

Because Url is a text-based protocol, gif/png/jpeg binary is coded with base64. In other words, with the introduction of base64, any form of data format can be supported. Here's an example of a PNG image that displays a Mozilla icon in the browser.

parameter  := attribute "=" value

urlchar refers to characters allowed in general url s, some of which need to be escaped, such as "=" to be escaped to "% 3D", but I tested that, at least in Firefox, it is possible not to escape.

parameter can extend the attributes of mediatype, commonly charset, to define the encoding format, which is needed in multilingual situations. For example, the following example.

Some online transformations convert "=" in base64 to% 3D, which is the same as "=" in Url, and there's no problem with not converting.
