Android-Bluetooth Low Energy Development

Keywords: Android Attribute

1. Preface

1. Android 4.3 (API Level 18) started to provide low power Bluetooth development API.
2. According to API, we can find devices, query services, read and write characteristics.
3. As the name implies, BLE appears to significantly reduce energy consumption, which allows apps to interact with low-power devices, such as proximity sensors, heart rate monitors, fitness equipment, and so on.

2. Key terms and concepts

  1. Generic Attribute Profile (GATT): The GATT protocol defines a general specification for sending and receiving short messages over BLE connections.
  2. Attribute Protocol (ATT): GATT is based on ATT, which is an optimal protocol for BLE devices.
  3. Characteristic: This can be seen as a class to describe some interactive information.
  4. Descriptor: Descriptor, defining attributes to describe the value of Characteristic;
  5. Service: A service used to collect Characteristic data, e.g. Heart Rate Monitor collects Characteristic data related to heart rate measurements;

3.manifest permission configuration
Declaring authority

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.BLUETOOTH"/>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.BLUETOOTH_ADMIN"/>

The following statement is statically declared to indicate whether app supports BLE, required = "true" table support, and vice versa.

<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.bluetooth_le" android:required="true"/>

After that, check the code to see if the device supports BLE.

// Use this check to determine whether BLE is supported on the device. Then
// you can selectively disable BLE-related features.
if (!getPackageManager().hasSystemFeature(PackageManager.FEATURE_BLUETOOTH_LE)) {
    //No support for todo uuuuuuuuuuuu
}else{
    //Support todo...
}

4. configure BLE

  1. The premise is that the equipment supports BLE.
  2. In case of false, it is necessary to dynamically check whether BLE is supported in the code.
//Initialize Bluetooth adapter, core class
final BluetoothManager bluetoothManager =
        (BluetoothManager) getSystemService(Context.BLUETOOTH_SERVICE);
mBluetoothAdapter = bluetoothManager.getAdapter();
private BluetoothAdapter mBluetoothAdapter;
...
//If Bluetooth adapter == null or Bluetooth is not turned on, the code requests that Bluetooth be turned on.
if (mBluetoothAdapter == null || !mBluetoothAdapter.isEnabled()) {
    Intent enableBtIntent = new Intent(BluetoothAdapter.ACTION_REQUEST_ENABLE);
    startActivityForResult(enableBtIntent, REQUEST_ENABLE_BT);
}

5. Search equipment

  1. Because the scanning device consumes more power, once you find the device you want, stop scanning immediately.
  2. Never scan repeatedly, but set the scanning time, because the previously available equipment may leave the BLE range, while the cycle scanning is a waste of electricity;
  3. Note: We can't scan low power Bluetooth devices (BLE) and traditional Bluetooth devices at the same time.
//startScan has many overloading methods
mBluetoothAdapter.startScan(BluetoothAdapter.LeScanCallback);

mBluetoothAdapter.startScan (List<ScanFilter> filters, ScanSettings settings, ScanCallback callback);

...
/**
 * Activity Example: Scanning and displaying available BLE devices
 */
public class DeviceScanActivity extends ListActivity {

    private BluetoothAdapter mBluetoothAdapter;
    private boolean mScanning;
    private Handler mHandler;

    // Scanning time 10 seconds
    private static final long SCAN_PERIOD = 10000;

        if (enable) {
            // Delay tasks through Handler, cancel scans

                @Override
                public void run() {
                    mScanning = false;
                    mBluetoothAdapter.stopLeScan(mLeScanCallback);
                }
            }, SCAN_PERIOD);

            mScanning = true;
            //Start scanning
            mBluetoothAdapter.startLeScan(mLeScanCallback);
            //Scanning the device usage area of the specified UUID
            startLeScan(UUID[], BluetoothAdapter.LeScanCallback)
        } else {
            mScanning = false;
            //Stop scanning

7. After connecting to the service, you can read the data.

    ...
    }
...
}

8. Receiving GATT Notification

private BluetoothGatt mBluetoothGatt;
BluetoothGattCharacteristic characteristic;
boolean enabled;
...
mBluetoothGatt.setCharacteristicNotification(characteristic, enabled);
...
BluetoothGattDescriptor descriptor = characteristic.getDescriptor(
        UUID.fromString(SampleGattAttributes.CLIENT_CHARACTERISTIC_CONFIG));
descriptor.setValue(BluetoothGattDescriptor.ENABLE_NOTIFICATION_VALUE);
mBluetoothGatt.writeDescriptor(descriptor);

onCharacteristicChanged() calls back to listen for remote device characteristic changes

@Override
// Characteristic notification
public void onCharacteristicChanged(BluetoothGatt gatt,
        BluetoothGattCharacteristic characteristic) {
    broadcastUpdate(ACTION_DATA_AVAILABLE, characteristic);
}

8.App and BLE devices interact and need to release resources

public void close() {
    if (mBluetoothGatt == null) {
        return;
    }
    mBluetoothGatt.close();
    mBluetoothGatt = null;
}
